Russell Alan Hulse (New York, USA, November 28, 1950) was an American physicist and a joint Nobel laureate with Joseph Taylor "for their discovery of a new type of pulsar, opening new possibilities in the study of gravitation." (1993). They made this discovery during observations (1974) with the Arecibo radio telescope, when they first detected the binary pulsar PSR B1913+16. Measurements (1991) of the shrinking orbit of this pair of stars that form the pulsar confirmed general relativity and the possibility that this system emits gravitational waves.
