Abraham Pais (English Abraham Pais; Amsterdam, Netherlands, May 19, 1918 – July 28, 2000, Copenhagen, Denmark) is an American theoretical physicist and historian of science of Dutch origin. Scientific works are devoted to issues of nuclear physics, physics of elementary particles, quantum field theory: among his main achievements is the idea of associative generation of strange particles, the theory of mixed states of particles and their oscillations, he also introduced the terms "lepton" and "baryon". He is the author of a number of works on the history of physics, including popular biographies of Einstein, Bohr and Oppenheimer. Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA (1962). Awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship, the National Book Award, the Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Award (1979), the Award for Scientific Journalism, and the Andrew Gemant Award (1993).
