Otto Stern (Zorau, Upper Silesia, February 17, 1888 - Berkeley, California, August 17, 1969) was a German and American physicist, laureate of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1943 “for his contribution to the development of the molecular ray method and his discovery of the magnetic moment of the proton”. He is the second most nominated person for a Nobel Prize, with 82 nominations during the years 1925–1945. Stern was an outstanding experimenter. His contributions to physics included the development of the molecular ray method, the discovery of spin (together with Walter Gerlach, 1922), the measurement of atomic magnetic moments, the demonstration of the wave nature of atoms and molecules, and the discovery of the magnetic moment of the proton.
