Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin

Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin (Saint-André-d'Hébertot, Kingdom of France, May 16, 1763 – November 14, 1829) was a French chemist and pharmacist, known for the discovery of two new chemical elements: chromium (1797) and beryllium (1798). He published one of the first manuals on chemical analysis (1799). He studied plant and animal substances, from which he isolated a number of chemical compounds. He isolated the active ingredient of tobacco (Nicotiana Tabacum), nicotine, a volatile alkaloid (1809). Member of the Paris Academy of Sciences (1795), foreign member of the Royal Society of London (1823).
