Mikhail Tsvet (Asti, Kingdom of Italy, May 14, 1872 – June 26, 1919, Voronezh, USSR) was a Russian botanist, plant physiologist, and biochemist. He developed the chromatographic method. He studied plant leaf pigments and isolated chlorophylls a, b, and c in pure form, as well as several xanthophyll isomers. Tsvet's discovery has been widely used and recognized since the early 1930s for the separation and identification of various pigments, vitamins, enzymes, hormones, and other organic and inorganic compounds, and served as the basis for the development of several new areas of analytical chemistry (gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, thin-layer chromatography).
