Guidobaldo del Monte (Pesaro, Italy, January 11, 1545 – January 6, 1607, Mombarocco, Italy) was an Italian mathematician, mechanic, astronomer, and philosopher. He drew attention (1586) to the young physicist and mathematician Galileo, the author of several original books and inventions but left penniless. The Marquis took him under his protection and introduced him to the Tuscan Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici, which helped Galileo obtain his first scientific position – a chair at the University of Pisa. He also helped Galileo become a professor at the University of Padua (1592), where he made his famous telescopic discoveries.
