Steven Sasson

Steven Sasson (born April 4, 1950, Brooklyn, New York) was an American electrical engineer and inventor who created a portable, battery-powered, self-contained digital camera at Kodak (1975). The camera weighed 8 pounds (3.6 kg) and used a CCD sensor with an image resolution of only 100 x 100 pixels (0.01 megapixels). The camera took black-and-white photographs. Images were recorded digitally onto a cassette tape, with each image taking 23 seconds. He was awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation (2009), the Progress Medal, and a Distinguished Fellowship "in recognition of an invention, research, publication, or other contribution that has resulted in significant advancement in the scientific or technological development of photography or imaging in the broadest sense" (2012). He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame (2011). He was also a member of the National Academy of Inventors (2018).
